The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has delivered 30 kg of biopesticide to the Agency of Plant Protection and Quarantine under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan to support safer and more environmentally sound locust control operations during the 2026 campaign.

The support is part of FAO’s ongoing efforts under its regional Locust Programme in the Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) to promote reduced-risk approaches and strengthen the sustainable management of transboundary pests. The biopesticide, based on the fungus Metarhizium acridum, provides an effective alternative to conventional chemical pesticides and helps reduce risks to human health, non-target species and the environment.

Locusts are among the most destructive transboundary agricultural pests, posing a serious threat to crops, pastures and food security in many parts of the world, including Central Asia. Timely detection, effective monitoring and coordinated control measures are essential to prevent large-scale outbreaks and reduce economic and environmental losses.
