Abstract:

The objective of this study was to extract bioactive compounds from licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) root and to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of a mixture of above extract with oligochitosan on Phytophthora capsici. The results showed that the combination formula of licorice extract (2.5%) and oligochitosan (2.0%) had the highest ability to inhibit the growth of P. capsici fungus (> 80%). It was also determined that glycyrrhizic acid reached 2.12% in licorice extract, with antifungal activity of 0; 27.9; 63.5 and 81.7% against P. capsici at concentrations of 0; 100; 250 and 500 ppm, respectively. The reducing power of glycyrrhizic acid was greatest (OD = 0.9) at the concentration of 1.0%. Therefore, licorice root extract supplemented with oligochitosan has potential for synthetic use as a fungicide against P. capsici, however, further in-depth studies are needed.
